How to Introduce Yourself to a New Team
Starting a new job is exhausting enough without having to figure out how to say "Hi, I work here now" without sounding like a robot. Here are exact templates for Slack, email, and meetings.
1. Slack / Microsoft Teams Messages
Keep these casual, friendly, and brief. Emojis are highly encouraged.
"Hi everyone! 👋 I'm [Name], and I'm joining today as the new [Job Title]. I'll be working mostly on [One specific project]. Really excited to be here and looking forward to meeting you all!"
"Hey team! I'm [Name], the new [Title]. I'm based in [City], and when I'm not working, I'm usually [One hobby, e.g., hiking with my dog]. Can't wait to jump in and get to know everyone!"
"Thanks for the warm welcome! So excited to join the team. Feel free to say hi—I'm currently trying to learn everyone's names, so forgive me if I ask twice! 😊"
2. In a Team Meeting (Zoom or In-Person)
You will inevitably be asked to "say a few words." Use this script.
"Hi everyone, I'm [Name]. I'm joining as the new [Title]. Previously I was at [Previous Company], doing similar work. I'm really excited to be here, learn how everything works, and start helping out. Thanks for having me."
"Hi folks, I'm [Name]. I'm taking on the [Role] position. For the next few weeks, I'll probably just be a sponge trying to absorb as much context as possible. Looking forward to working with all of you."
3. Email Introductions
For more formal corporate environments or cross-functional teams.
"Hi everyone,\n\nI wanted to send a quick note to introduce myself. I'm [Name], the new [Title] on the [Team Name] team.\n\nI'll be focusing primarily on [Project/Area]. I'm looking forward to getting up to speed and collaborating with you all.\n\nBest,\n[Your Name]"
What NOT to Say
- "I'm here to fix things." (Even if you were hired to fix things, saying this on day 1 alienates the existing team.)
- Your entire resume. (Keep it to 1 sentence about your past. They care about what you'll do *here*.)
- Overly personal details. (Keep hobbies light. "I like baking" is good. "I'm going through a tough divorce" is not for the Slack intro.)
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a Slack introduction be?
Very short. State your name, your role, a brief sentence on what you'll be doing, and maybe one light personal fact (like a hobby or a pet). Bullet points work great.
Do I need to send an email to everyone?
Ask your manager! Usually, a manager sends the formal 'Welcome to the team' email, and you just reply to that thread saying hello. If the team primarily uses Slack or Teams, an email might be overkill.
What if I'm nervous speaking in the team meeting?
Write down your 3-sentence script on a sticky note. Stick it right next to your webcam. Read it, smile, and say 'I'm looking forward to working with all of you.' That's it!
